Trends in LED Illuimination

Present societies rely heavily on lighting: office buildings, schools, hospitals, etc. In total lots of energy is necessary in order to provide electricity for the lighting needed. Despite of an increasing demand of lighting energy the carbon footprint can be reduced by applying modern energy efficient technology. LED is the most promising technology for energy efficient lighting. Therefore it is expected, that LED will take a major share in the general lighting market over the coming years. Since LEDs are small light sources often an optic is needed to shape and distribute the light in the desired distributions. Therefore optics will play an increasingly important role in general energy efficient lighting. A view on the trends in LED lighting will be given with a special attention to the optics needed for this new type of illumination.
