Abstract
Solar irradiation at the eye, e.g. in the UV range, is known to cause several pathological mutations of the eye or the surrounding tissue. Thus effective protection solutions for the eye are inevitable for the preservation of eye health. The light that hits the eye of a spectacle wearer can be separated into three portions: (1) light that is transmitted through a spectacle lens, (2) light that is reflected on the back surface of the lens, and (3) light that directly hits the eye without interaction with the lens. The presented experimental method allows the selective evaluation of the three contributions to ocular irradiance in a laboratory setup for a variety of spectacle lens solutions. We will discuss the results of various protection solutions of spectacles at different angles of incidence.
